Creating Content with the KIA Formula

The secret of excellent content is that it should contain three pieces. Even many renowned instructors unconsciously follow this principle without knowing its existence.

For simplicity, I have created a formula called “KIA,” which stands for Knowledge, Insight, and Approach. Before delving into the topic, let’s have a deeper understanding of these three words. Of course, here I am presenting my definition of these words, which may differ slightly from the dictionary’s definition.

1. Knowledge

The information available everywhere is knowledge. This information is usually easily accessible through internet searches. Accessing knowledge is relatively straightforward. One can quickly obtain it by reading reference books in any field. Therefore, knowledge encompasses all the available information about a subject that is easily accessible.

2. Insight

Insight is our personal opinion and experience about existing knowledge. Presenting insight from my perspective is “reducing options.” If there are dozens of methods to accomplish a task, and you recommend one of those methods as the best, you convey your insight.

Therefore, insight is a small part of the existing knowledge that, from your perspective as an educator, is more crucial. In other words, presenting insight can be summarized in this sentence: recognizing the problems of most learners and providing them with the best solution. We often derive Insight from our experiences and research.

3. Approach

An approach is a practical guideline that, by following step by step, one can achieve the desired result.

Suppose I tell you to open the “New” option in the File menu in Photoshop to create a post for Instagram, set the image dimensions to 1080 by 1080 pixels, and then start designing. If you precisely follow these steps, you will achieve the desired result. So, these instructions are an approach.

The problem with presenting an approach is that it only applies in some circumstances. It is enough for a change to occur in the latest version of Photoshop, where the previous approach is no longer correct. For example, some options may change. In a new version of Instagram, the image dimensions may change to 1280 by 1280 pixels. Therefore, some parts of our solution need to be validated.

With this new perspective that you have gained, you may understand why some tutorials are not successful enough. Perhaps in those tutorials, only a few approaches are presented without providing enough knowledge and insight to help the learner better understand the approach.

More than simply providing a precise approach is good, but more is needed because, as I mentioned, answers change with changing circumstances.
